This PowerPoint addresses the question, What is place value and why we need it. The most valuable question to understanding place value is "Why?"
A great lesson to use before showing this presentation is Kathy Richardson's "Zib". If you are not familiar with it, you should look it up. It has been the most valuable lesson I have ever taught when teaching place value.
I designed this presentation to be used after I taught the lesson “Zib” by Kathy Richardson. In Zib, students practice grouping and ungrouping various amounts. As students become fluent in grouping, they also learn that the same number can mean different amounts. It is quite odd for a beginning learner to hear that we can call a single unit “one” and we can call a group of ten “one”. Through their practice with adding and subtracting, as well as representing units and groups with the same number, students are given a good foundation on which to begin building their place value foundation. This presentation is designed to reinforce the notion that the same number can be used to mean different things. I also wanted students to understand that our number system is based on a limited number of symbols and that this system was a necessary invention. By teaching students why we needed a place value system, I was hoping to solidify what that system is and how it works. I am open to any and all feedback. This file took a long time to make, and I hope that it saves you time. Please feel free to contact me with any suggestions.
