This lesson introduces the biography genre to elementary students. Students will be given an explanation of biographies.
After a brief introduction, you will find a link to an online book about Martin Luther King, Jr. The link goes to the We Give Books website--which is a free online book database. But, in order to use We Give Books, you must first sign up for a free account (which only takes a minute)
You will read the text and then students will give facts they learned about Martin Luther King, Jr. and you will list them on the graphic organizer provided for you.
Then, together as a group, students will look at pictures of book covers and decide if the book is a biography/not and explain why.
For independent work, there is a handout containing thirteen book cover pictures. Students will cut the pictures out and glue them in either the "biography" column or "not a biography" column.
