"What is an American?"
This item is 2 pages from Michel Guillame Jean de Crevecoeur's "What is an American?" which is letter No. 3 from "Letters from an American Farmer."
It comes with a 1-page reading assessment that has 10 multiple-choice questions. (The text is fair use.)
The assessment is Common Core aligned.
There is also a 3-page answer key that goes along with it. Two pages are text and 1 page contains the answers.
The documents are in Word and in PDF; therefore, they total 12 pages.
I use this reading assessment as a "cold" read test for my American literature classes as part of their Revolutionary Literature unit.
You, of course, could use it as a text that is taught or even use it as a lesson for a substitute if you needed something quickly. The students could read it and research it on their own or in class if you can get students to a computer center.
Common Core State Standards
RI.9-10.1, 6, 9
