Product Description
Students will be introduced to the atom and atomic size, atomic structure and learn how to use the periodic table of elements to identify elements based on their atomic structure. They will also learn how to calculate the number of protons, neutrons and electrons.

This activity is divided into three days:

Day 1: Students will read the story of Matterville, investigate how big an atom is through a hands on activity, read about the atom- the smallest part of matter, color code an atom model and record facts about the parts of an atom, and use their periodic table of elements to figure out the element represented. Students will end class with a TedEd video clip about the size of an atom.

Day 2: After an intro video of dogs teaching chemistry, students will explore atomic structure by drawing protons, neutrons and electrons on an atom model. They will then work through a very detailed PPT presentation on atomic calculations. They will use their periodic table to find an element and then identify the atomic number, atomic mass, and learn how to calculate protons, neutrons and electrons. The Atomic Math Challenge provides practice with atomic calculations and will allow students to also color code the given element cards as metals, nonmetals or metalloids.

Day 3: Class will begin with a whole class review of answers to the Atomic Math Challenge using the PPT and then students will cut out definitions, match them to the correct vocab word and then paste them into their packet.

The attached zipped file includes:

Atomic Structure and the Periodic Table Teacher Notes- 1 page pdf with materials needed, link to a periodic table, and links to video clips.

Atomic Structure and the Periodic Table PPT- 53 slides that include links to the video clips, instructions for hands on activities, interactive slides to work through as a class and answers to the Atomic Math Challenge practice problems

Student Packet Atomic Structure and the Periodic Table- 9 pages

A short check for understanding quiz Periodic Table Quiz: Calculating Protons, Neutrons and Electrons
can be found in my TPT store. It is an 8 question quiz on calculating protons, neutrons and electrons and identifying atomic number and atomic mass.
