What is the 'FAME FACTOR'? - Cross Curricular Unit of Work

What is the ‘Fame Factor’? Do your students have the ‘Fame Factor’? Help them recognise their brilliance and discover if they have their own X-Factor.

In this project/assignment, Students choose famous individuals who have the ‘Fame Factor’ from four different categories to plan an inquiry-based research assignment. Students research, compare and contrast their individuals to come up with a definition for ‘Fame Factor’. Students then use the definition they create in producing several different examples of their learning.

The project can be made to have an Australian or International focus depending on the teacher's preference by setting boundaries on famous icon selections. The project also provides an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspective with one of the categories students select people for being ‘Indigenous Person’. The cross-curricular project combines Australian Curriculum outcomes and skills from the Civics and Citizenship, History, Geography and English learning areas with further links to Visual Arts and Media Arts depending on students selections in learning.

There are two versions of the assignment in this package which each come with assignment specification, student mark sheet and assessment record sheets.

-- The first version of the assignment provides students with a matrix to choose their learning tasks. Students empower themselves with the ability to choose their personal learning tasks worth 10, 20, 30, 40 or 50 points to build up to 250points. Activities range in complexity and use the principles of Bloom’s Taxonomy, that is reflected in the value of the item towards their total. These points are proportional to their marks for each completed learning activity.

-- The second version of the assignment specification is fixed with the learning tasks to provide an option for teachers and students with restricted resources or time to fully engage in the work and outcomes.

Learning tasks provide opportunities to expose students to procedural text, timelines, maps, visual comparisons charts, oral language, media art presentation, discussions, visual arts sketches, social media (Facebook, Twitter), goal setting, letter writing, poetry/songs and advertising.

The package includes 12 templates that students could optionally use in presenting or performing the learning activities. There is also a self-evaluation sheet that can be used with students at the end of the task. Several pages provide QR codes and links to web pages and iPad apps that may be useful for students in their research. Word Wall and Vocabulary cards provide over 45 terms that students may encounter or explore.
