Main idea is a concept that is often challenging for students to grasp. In order to identify the main idea, students often resort to pointing out the topic sentence of a reading. However, this is not always a true indicator of a text's main idea. This 61 page main idea packet helps students to scaffold in order to identify the difference between main idea and details.
Students practice Main Idea in a variety of ways:
1.Students learn how supporting details contribute to an overall, or main idea by organizing words into groups and determining what the main idea is.
2.Students are given a Main Idea topic and cut and paste the main idea into the appropriate section of the graphic organizer. Students come up with supporting details.
3.Students are given words that belong to two separate main ideas. The supporting details are organized under a chart with two separate main idea headings.
4.Students practice main idea through text. Students are given a paragraph (also great for strengthening reading skills while practicing main idea) and have to determine the main idea of the text. Several choices are provided through multiple choice options and students select the answer they think best describes the main idea.
*Depending on how comfortable your students are with main idea, students can work in partners to determine the main idea or individually for any of the activities in this packet.
Students learn to sort information into a variety of graphic organizers and look for key information.
