I used this assignment to help the students understand how things that exist in our present will one day be in the past. The assignment consists of a short reading, defining the past and present. Then the assignment has students complete a chart of items used in the near past and their current counterpart. For example, Kindles are used for reading and books are slowly being phased out. The idea of the assignment is to help students understand that things that we use now may become items that are no longer commonly used and will become a part of our history. The assignment also aims to help students understand that our memories are imperfect and even if lived during a time period we may not remember the events clearly.
