In this lesson, your students will be exposed to two competing paths towards black equality in America - MLK's nonviolence vs. Malcolm X's, "by any means necessary."
The lesson includes an anticipatory set/class discussion about bullying and how to best handle that situation as a metaphor. The students then read two attached primary documents. The included assignment asks the students to summarize and explain the merits of each approach. Finally, the attached PowerPoint explains why MLK's approach ultimately won out as the preferred approach among the majority of historians.
