This Handbook is for teachers, older kids and parents. This Handbook is the result of a two year obesity prevention research project with preschoolers called Fitadelphia Kids. This Handbook contains a culmination of scientific findings by doctors and universities about the negative effects that over-consumption of processed foods have on our children. Six of the Scary Monsters have been linked to angry or violent behavior in children and most of the Scary Monsters are obesogens.
This Handbook is meant as a fun and easy way to help children and families learn about the dangers of over-consumption of processed foods. It also contains a table with alternative healthier food choices.
This Handbook is not meant to diagnose any disease but offers research on the causes of obesity and obesity related diseases.
Each Scary Monster has its own fact chapter and a section in the reference and research pages at the end of the book for further reading.
Use this book when teaching from the rhyming book to answer questions.
Use this book to teach older children and to create parent workshops.
Dr. William Sears
“We owe it to our children to keep them from being over-fat. The risk of just about every disease increases in proportion to the extra fat the body has to lug around, especially the big three killers: cancer, heart disease, and stroke. The plain fact is: lean people are healthier and live longer. You will notice that we prefer to use the terms “fat control” and “over-fat” rather than “weight control” or “overweight.” Fat is the real issue. Many healthy, large-boned, muscular people are “overweight” according to charts and scales, yet they are lean. Muscle and bone weigh more than fat, but being overfat is what harms your health. We don’t want you and your family to have the goal of being thin, but rather we want you to be lean.”
