This Building Outside the Blocks project is a great way to get to know your students while building community. Students explore their names: why they were selected for them, what they mean, the etymology, the cultural heritage and origin, whether or not their name reflects who they are. Then, they gather the information into a report and prepare to present their findings to the class on their selected date (based on the teacher-created options). The checklist is a helpful guide for the student and teacher. It is a great presentation skill and research diagnostic while also being a helpful way to proactively promote an inclusive class culture and get to know who's in the room.
