Inferencing is tough!
Kids struggle when inferring because the process involves all this higher level thinking and using the text in a way that they are just not used to. These paragraphs help kids find text evidence to support their ideas.
How to for individuals: Kids can work through these paragraphs by themselves. I would provide answer stations so they can check their work.
How to for partners: Have the kids do their work by themselves and then check their work with a partner. Make sure they know that their inferences MUST be supported with the evidence from the text.
How to for read alouds: These passages are just weird and gross enough that they make the perfect read alouds. Use the prompts as guiding questions for your mini-lessons.
How to for writing extension: Each passage includes a “what do you think will happen next?” question. This is a great starter for all sorts of weird and wonderful writing. Make sure to have the kids accompany their writing with their own inference questions to use to challenge their partners.
This packet contains 11 passages all partnered with questions that prompt the kids to infer, supporting their answers with the text.
Oh yeah....and the passages are just gross enough that they will appeal to even your hardest to please middle level kid.
