Included in this download are 30 secret messages designed to get your students blending and segmenting. Each message is displayed clearly on a single page. Please see the product preview for the exact sentences I have included (they are listed on the contents page). There are also instructions for use and a BLM to help you and your students create a class book of secret messages.
I have designed this product for students in Year 2 and 3, but it can also be used with very capable Year 1 students, or older students needing extra support to develop blending and segmenting skills. You know your students best.
'Secret Messages' are described in detail in the resource 'First Steps Spelling Resource Book' by the Education Department of Western Australia (1997). Secret Messages are an excellent way for your students to practise blending and segmenting. These are critical skills for both reading and spelling. Display the messages on your interactive or regular whiteboard for the whole class to solve before school, when starting the literacy block, or to settle students after recess or lunch. You could also use them with a small group as a teacher-directed or independent activity. Students could decode the secret messages independently or with a partner.
You could also try keeping a class book of secret messages, using the included BLM. Ask a different child to write and illustrate the secret message each day and collate these pages into a class book for the book corner. Just print out the secret messages 4 to a page and in black and white so these can be glued on the sheet. There should be plenty of room for the secret message clues and the illustration.
There are enough messages here to last through a ten-week term if you do three each week.
