Multi-step Division and Addition—Supporting Students as they Create their Own Math Story Problems

This product focuses on multi-step story problem creation so that each story problems can be solved by dividing and then adding or adding and then dividing.
These problem solving activity cards allow students to insert personally meaningful information into word problem forms to create their own story problems. Each of the 14 problems in this product are written in three versions (A-C) so that each version requires students to fill in successively more information as they complete different levels. Students are asked to fill in specific information (for example, a name, number, or place) on the left side of the activity card and then transfer the information to the story problem form on the right to create the problem. Please see the thumbnails for this product or see my free product for an example of the style that is used for each problem. (The free product focuses on subtraction but uses the same style.)
Teachers can allow students to be creative and write silly problems based on the information they choose to put into the problem form, or teachers can have students work hard to make sure that the problems they write are logical and make sense. Either way, the word problem forms are set up to make sure that all the problems written using them require students to solve them by dividing and adding and using their knowledge of what division and addition mean.
Teachers can use the different versions to differentiate the activity based on the level of support a student needs. Once the student has filled in the information and made sure the problem makes sense, he or she will use the problem solving skills necessary to solve the problem.
A fourth version (D) provided for each problem is a completed example. The answers for the completed examples can be found in the answer key provided with this product.
Depending on the numbers that students choose to insert into the problems, the division parts in at least one of the problems in this product could require each of the following skills: dividing 2-digit numbers by 1-digit numbers, 2-digit numbers by 2-digit numbers, 3-digit numbers by 1-digit numbers, 3-digit numbers by 2-digit numbers, 4-digit numbers by 2-digit numbers, or 4-digit numbers by 1-digit numbers.
