I developed this set of task cards for some professional development I did with some teachers. There's several ways you can set these cards up in your classroom. I've set it up several different ways: 1) post all the cards for one holiday on the math board and have the students rotate to them 2) post one and do it whole group and 3) post one and have the students work in pairs in "center" time.
The premise behind the cards is this: I've taken a word problem and left off the question. The students work together to come up with the question(s) for each card. After they've created the question(s), they then have to solve the question.
My rules for the students: 1) You cannot use a basic question someone else would automatically come up with 2) Once someone posts a question, you may NOT write the same question, and 2) You cannot change my numbers, but you may ADD to my scenario! :)
A great extension and/or assessment for this is to then take the questions and type them up in one document. Have the students to answer their created questions independently.
Great activity for the 8 Mathematical Practice Standards!
If you use this activity with your students, please leave feedback - let me know what you think! Also, let me know if you'd like a variety of questions for the year!
