This is a one day project for students who are reading The Scarlet Letter. I do it after the first 4 or 5 chapters. Students are required to reflect on a list of "sins" (I just got a list from online and projected it on the board) and sort through them to decide which are the most humiliating and which are "no big deal" sins. Then they choose a sin to label themselves with and have to design their own letter. They do not have to wear the letter or disclose what it stands for but I do ask them to do a short reflection on how they would feel if they, like Hester, had to wear their label and have everyone know what it stood for.
