-A formative tool to gauge your differentiated levels!
-A fun way to engage students and get them invested in your class!
-A Great decoration for bulletin boards or those awkward blank walls!
This is my FAVORITE way to start the school year! Get to know your students' names, interests, and work ethic all within this DIFFERENTIATED activity! This assignment also allows you to engage in positive dialogue with each student about his/her interests.
Using their name as the backdrop, students develop a collage of words and/or images to describe themselves. Each letter of the name is assigned a specific topic, such as their personality, goals, hobbies, strengths, etc. The brainstorming organizer provides space for students to answer these topics with 4 or more words/images. This requirement can be expanded or reduced based on specific student needs. Additional scaffolding questions are included to guide struggling students during the brainstorming process. Students also have the choice to create a tangible or digital product.
What's more, this activity is a great way to gauge each student's work ethic and level of independence. Because this assignment is completely student-centered, students will be engaged and invested in their product. Students who struggle to develop responses can be easily targeted with the additional supporting questions provided in this product.
So stop using the first day of school to review the rules and procedures! Get them talking about your class with this creative and fun assignment instead!
