This strategy in recipe card format as always, is a twist on Simultaneous Roundtable where whole groups are writing on a sentence strip and then trading strips where they will write again...after thinking of course. I like to get an idea of the student's prior knowledge with words before dealing with them so I use this strategy to first solicit that prior knowledge from all in the group and then use resources like the textbook etc. to add more valid information for use in creating a personal more meaningful definition to share with the class and post on the word wall. When I teach the strategy I first use made-up or silly sounding words. That way the students can get used to figuring out what they think the word might mean even though they might not by sounding out word parts. I included the silly word list I use here as well. Don't forget to always remember good old Mr. Rogers and this has nothing to do with the fact that I am a Green Bay fan. Say the words and have your students repeat them back to you...hilarious when using the fun words!
