PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

In this lesson students will analyze the California State History Standards about the Atlantic Slave trade and determine what and who is missing by reading primary and secondary sources and finding corroborating evidence. Although it is analyzing California's State's standards, the investigation is appropriate of all states. This is a great lesson to teach empathy, close reading skills, corroboration skills (finding additional sources to provide additional historical evidence) and critical thinking.

This lesson would be great for 7th grade Medieval World History during the unit on "Global Convergence"; "The Americas" and the "Age of Exploration." This can also be used in 8th Grade US History as a precursor to the Antebellum Unit. This resource would also be useful to ELA courses that are investigating expository text or teaching empathy.

Included in the lesson:
1) Lesson plan with helpful suggestions and additional resources
2) Reading exercise and research opportunity for students
3) Student handout with primary and secondary sources with accompanying text-dependent questions.

Thank you.
