This activity is perfect to teach or review mapping skills and using a map scale. This activity will have your students discovering distances between their state's capital and others. The questions are generic enough that it can be applied to any state, which is why no answer key is included because the answers will vary based on what state you live in.
There is also a challenge piece, where students pick a destination that they would like to visit during spring break. They will use math skills to figure out the following elements:
-How many hours it would take to drive there
-The amount of money they would need for gas
-How many hours it would take if they flew in a plane
-Comparing costs of gas prices to plane ticket prices
You will need a map of the US with the capitals labeled, and a map scale where 100 miles is equal to 1/4 of an inch. I printed a map and drew on the scale myself before I made copies of it. This was just easier for me. :)
