Next Generation Science Standard (NGSS) addressed in this packet:
Grade K: WEATHER AND CLIMATE
K-ESS3-2: Ask questions to obtain information about the purpose of weather forecasting to prepare for, and respond to, severe weather.
Use this packet to discuss the importance of listening to weather forecasts in order to prepare for mild or severe weather. Start off by discussing each of the 4 types of extreme weather found on the student worksheet (hurricane, tornado, blizzard, thunderstorm). Have students color the worksheet as each condition is discussed. Use the cut & paste worksheet “Forecast the Weather” to encourage students to predict weather based on conditions they can observe. “What Does a Meteorogist Do?” worksheet explains the weather person on TV. The worksheet “Be Prepared” can be used to discuss the importance of preparing for extreme weather, in this case, a blizzard. Have your students play a 14 card matching game encouraging them to match a weather forecast with how they should prepare for the particular weather condition. 3 main types of clouds are discussed, show your students the slides on cumulus, nimbostratus, and cirrus clouds. The first slide asks what do the clouds look like? What kind of weather will it be? The second shows the answer (see preview). Also included:
-Water cycle graphic and worksheet
-3 types of clouds worksheet (cumulus, nimbostratus, cirrus)
-My Pet Cloud craftivity
- Why Does It Rain? Science experiment
