After learning about the different genres of books in our classroom library, I have students work on this activity in small groups. I create a basket of books from our library, making sure that there are at least three from each genre listed on the chart.
Students examine a book, one at a time, and decide which genre it belongs in. I tell them to study the front cover, back cover, and read a few pages inside. I also float in and out of the group to offer helpful questions like, "Could that happen in real life?". Students record the title or series' title on their chart. They must find three examples of each genre. If any books were tricky for multiple students, we discuss the book and its genre at the end.
