I had my students complete this project at the end of our unit on Physical Properties of Matter.
This is a hands-on activity that allows students to practice measuring/observing properties of matter. The activity allows students to collaborate with their group members to describe a “Mystery Matter”. Students can rotate through stations to measure/observe the physical properties or if you have enough materials they can complete the ‘stations’ at their table. At the end, students complete a ‘gallery walk’ to try and guess other Mystery Matter objects. The activity is designed for 6 groups of 4, but can be easily adjusted.
Physical Properties Reviewed: conductivity, solubility, relative density, mass, magnetism, and state of matter.
Materials needed to test:
• Conductivity: Materials needed to create circuit (per group or per class)
• Solubility: cup, water, stirring stick
• Relative Density: cup/beaker, water
• Mass: triple beam balance/double pan balance
• Magnetism: magnet
