Product Description
The intention of this Unit Plan is to teach children character and moral lessons using Literature Standard 2 for grades 3-5, and then instruct students in writing their own Narrative Moral using Writing Standard 3, (Writing Narratives) through the use of Stephen Cosgrove’s Serendipity books. Throughout the course of the Unit, students will also address Listening and Speaking Standards to discuss, clarify, express and provide evidence for their learning and opinions (SL.1-4 & 6.) Students will have the opportunity to choose some of the Exemplar Texts they read and they will also choose their own moral to construct and convey.
As the stories are finalized students will be asked to share their story with a younger child or group of children. These stories will be published using appropriate and accessible media.
This unit was especially designed with reluctant readers and writers in mind. The end goal of sharing their own story that contains the moral of their choice was highly motivating for this intermediate grade level group.
