Wheel of Talking
How it works: This is a great tool for developing quiet work habits when working on projects in my art class. It really helps set the tone from the beginning of work time. I use it after students understand the directions and are all set up to work. I got the idea from another teacher, created this document and it has worked really well!
Begin: 5 min silent work time (only the teacher can answer questions, students must raise hand and teacher will come over and whisper with the student).
Next: 5 min whisper (students may whisper a question to other students)
Finally, Quiet talking is allowed during the remaining work time.
The benefit to this is that you can tell students “it’s only 5 min” and it gets everyone focused on what they are doing!
Assembly: You can print the “Wheel of Talking” poster size and laminate. I cut out the arrow and glued it on tagboard for reinforcement before lamination. I also used magnets to keep the arrow from sliding down when pointed upwards. Finally, you will need a brass fastener to pin the arrow in the middle!
