This product helps students learn the rules for when to use a comma through the following:
*Two interactive notebook pages with examples of sentences that follow each rule for using commas, space for students to practice using commas in the same way, and space for students to find examples of commas in their reading.
* Grammar Guru Slips-- when students come across commas in their reading, they can fill out a Grammar Guru Slip. These slips have students analyze how commas are used in the sentence they found. They then check the corresponding rule for using commas. I have students submit their slips into a shoe box. Each Friday, I draw two slips and those students receive a prize.
*Comma Sort Activity (with answer key) -- students cut out the sentence cards and sort them based on which comma rule they follow. There are two versions of the activity; one already has the commas, and the other requires students to first place commas in the correct spots.
Note: There are numerous rules for comma usage. This product emphasizes the following:
*Using a comma when listing items in a series.
*Using a comma in compound sentences.
*Using a comma to set off an introductory phrase.
*Using a comma with dialogue.
*Using a comma when directly addressing someone.
*Using a comma to set off a tag question.
