Kids struggle when inferring because the process involves all this higher level thinking and using the text in a way that they are just not used to. This activity helps kids use text visualize and build setting.
How to: Have your kids pick several random cards. (80 cards to pick from!) They will write the traits on their planning page and then draw a “snapshot” of the setting. They will also write a sentence that explains the setting to their partner.
When they are done, they will show their work to their partner and have them reverse the process and guess the words they were given.
This works as a super effective mini-lesson.
