Where does our food come from? Does milk just show up at the grocery store? What grows on the farm? I have a passion for teaching kids that food does not start at the grocery store! I was inspired to write this unit when I asked my kinders WHERE DOES OUR FOOD COME FROM and they answered THE GROCERY STORE! Oh gosh, this is a correct answer, of course, but since I am a farmers wife, I just could not leave that answer alone!
I wanted my students to realize that not all farmers take care of animals; that some farms are simply grain farms and nothing else. Animals ARE included in this unit, but I included only dairy cows and chickens and do not discuss these animals as meat products. There are several farm websites and books that promote the healthy eating of beef, pork, and lamb.
Designed to be a supplement to your thematic Farm unit, this booklet is written in an easy reader format. Students illustrate the book themselves by using basic drawing and cutting skills. A discussion of where food comes from and the products grown on the farm is the main idea of this packet. A blank lined sheet is included to aid in your differentiated instruction. A full color book with real life photographs is included that can be printed and used an introduction to the unit or imported onto your interactive white board. Corn, soybeans, wheat, dairy cattle, chickens, and sheep are included in this packet. Word wall cards are also included that can be used to aid in spelling and differentiation. Coloring book style pages have been added that can be used in place of the how to draw illustrations.
