Where I'm From: Poem Analysis
This is a lesson plan and student materials for analyzing George Ella Lyon’s poem “Where I’m From.” The lesson plan begins with a review of common figurative language terms, then students complete a guided close read of the poem. Each round of reading has a different focused, but all rounds lead students to answer the lesson’s guiding question: Does the word “childhood” have a positive or negative connotation for George Ella Lyon? The assessment for the lesson requires students to write a paragraph, with textual evidence, that answers the lesson’s guiding question.
This lesson is deigned for a 90 minute class period. It aligns to standards R1, R2 and R4, and could be used in upper middle or high school.
