Where the Red Fern Grows is a classic novel that I am sure many of us can remember reading in our younger years. Billy's relationship with his dogs Old Dan and Little Ann is one that tugs at our heart strings.
I found that this book was too long to do traditional question/answer/vocabulary worksheets while keeping up with our every day reading series, however, I still wanted to keep my students engaged and in love with the novel. I found that students LOVED being able to choose their own activity to complete for each chapter. They have 8 activities to choose from, and only use four during the CH bulk.
The key points take a bit longer due to the fact that they need to follow the guidelines to get full credit. I always do the first couple of chapters with the students to model exactly what they need to receive full points.
I also make sure to go over some of the key questions that are on the comprehension tests (such as Grandpa's raccoon trap that they have to illustrate) as we read the novel.
Activities and comprehension tests are in different chapter bulks.
Materials will need to be reprinted for each CH bulk.
