Which Doesn’t Belong? is a great activity to incorporate into your math time. This can be done whole group, small group, or as an individual activity.

Students choose one of the boxes that they feel doesn’t belong with the other three boxes. Then they must justify their thinking by telling why they think it doesn’t belong with the other three. The great thing is that there isn’t a right or wrong answer. The focus is more on the justification of each student’s answer.

I typically do this as a whole class warm-up in my class. Students chose the box they think doesn’t belong and write their justification. Then we come back to the carpet and share out their thinking.
