This is a no-prep, custom-made, PDF and TpT Digital packet for grades 5-8 who are reading the graphic novel , by R.J. Palacio. Included is a 26-page student workbook (or worksheets), an answer key, vocabulary lists for the teacher organized by page number and assignment, plus optional vocabulary bookmarks. This packet supports CCSS (Common Core State Standards) and includes a listing of standards supported. Purchasing this product gives the buyer access to both the printable and digital products which makes it easier to switch from classroom to distance teaching as needed.
The student workbook divides the text into five reading assignments averaging 40-pages each. With each reading assignment, there are 4-pages of activities that go along with the text. Activities include some glossary use, literary mini-lessons (similes, metaphors, onomatopoeia, foreshadowing, and irony), point-of-view, character traits, English-to-French vocabulary, and theme. In addition, students are given essential practice in constructing written responses through writing tasks requiring students to infer, compare & contrast, determine importance, demonstrate comprehension, and summary writing.
The student workbook is designed to be meaningful, independent work thus allowing students to have directed work while the teacher is working on small group or individual instruction. Also, the workbook can be used as a guide for a parent or an aide as they direct a student book club or conduct small group discussions of the book. Questions and tasks in the workbook are intended to prompt high level thinking and promote quality group discussions.

in a Nutshell:
Published in November of 2019, this graphic novel was written and illustrated by R.J. Palacio as her “act of resistance for these times”. She calls this piece of historical fiction a Wonder Story because it carries with it the same theme as her other books (kindness transforms us) and it is Grandmère’s story being told to Julian (and hence to the reader) emphasizing that while we cannot change the past, we can prevent it from happening again. We learn about her childhood experiences in France during WWII. We see the devasting consequences of prejudice through the eyes of a young victim who is beholden to strangers for her safety. This book is full of the same WONDER-ful sensitivity, warmth, and truisms as Palacio's previous books and readers are bound to be inspired by it.
Reading level approximately 6th grade. Content appropriate for ages 9+.
