By re-creating King Leopold II of Belgium's brutal 19th century colonization of the Congo with modern-day actors, filmmaker Peter Bate presents a tragic chapter of European history that's been largely forgotten. In the process of harvesting rubber from a vast forced labor camp nestled in the region -- ruled with an iron fist by His Majesty himself -- millions of innocent Africans would die for the sake of profit.
King Leopold II
Heart of Darkness
This documentary serves as great visual for studying Imperialism in Africa in World History. It also traces the rubber from natural resource to production an all the atrocities in between. Video notes will allow students to follow along and remain engaged as they take in valuable content. Notes can also be given as a homework assignment where students can view the film at home or on YouTube and turn in video notes the next day. This assignment also speaks to point of view and provides an alternative source and perspective for those studying in Advanced Placement (AP) courses.
