This simple reading survey can be given at the beginning of the year to get to know your students as readers and for them to get to know themselves! It can be given quarterly as well to help students continually reflect on their own reading habits and to set goals. Many of these “prompts” can serve as excellent minilessons to help students understand what independent readers do and think to help them be successful.
The Common Core asks that students read and think critically; this requires excellent reading “behaviors” that need to be explicitly taught. Here is one way to start the discussions with your class!
