Appropriate for U.S. History, AP U.S. History (APUSH)
This activity is fantastic for introducing students to historical argumentation! The lesson provides students with a series of accounts as to the founding of America. Their challenge is to determine who should receive credit for founding America. The prompt is intentionally a little vague so students may come to various conclusions, using the documents as their evidence - do they consider "discovery" as the founding of America? or maybe the first European settlers? or perhaps the first colony that would become part of the future United States? Students seem to enjoy the investigative aspect of the assignment, and are able to work on critical thinking skills and historical argumentation.
