This is a fun activity for students to learn and practice the terms title, author and call number, and to practice reading aloud and presenting to others. It will also expose students to a variety of books they might like to check out. Students must pay close attention so they will know when it is their turn to share! This can be used as a formative assessment of library skills and vocabulary.
Students have a ‘script’ and a book and must fill in the blanks of the script, reading aloud the title, the author and the call number directly from the book. The student ends with “I am looking for a book with the call number ____” and the next student gets a turn, and so on. You can extend the lesson for older grades by adding the publisher, or asking students to make a prediction from the cover about what the book is about or something about a character, etc.
Students love to have their moment in the spotlight and you can expose them to many new books!
This document includes instructions, as well as picture book and fiction chapter book ‘scripts,’ that can be adapted to meet your needs.
