This 9-page student book fits in with lessons about nocturnal animals. The reading level is perfect for K-1 students, as well as 2nd grade children who need a little extra support. Each page includes beginning high-frequency words and predictable text with some breaks in pattern to keep readers engaged with the words on the page.
Each page also includes a missing animal word. The children will use the letter tiles provided at the end of the packet to build and glue each word to the page. Some sounds are indicated with a single box, but sounds made with two letters are indicated by a double box and the "silent e" is indicated by a dotted box. This helps emerging readers understand that some sounds are made with more than one letter. (An extra set of letters is provided... just in case students lose one or two... or ten.)
The final page in the book invites the children to draw and label another nocturnal animal that isn't already included in the book. This gives the reader a chance to demonstrate their own background knowledge and practice stretching out and spelling another word on their own.
Clear, simple blackline images are included on each page for students to color when done.
