Setting goals and persevering - sometimes reading is like running the Iditarod! You can use the historical sled dog race as a reading incentive. This was originally designed as an individual reading challenge to explore books across the curriculum (Dewey) but could easily be incorporated into small groups or as a whole class activity.
Included are 2 maps (southern route & northern route) of the race with the checkpoints - 25 great checkpoints for reading (for minutes read, pages read, chapters read or other goals set); a reading log; and a reading checklist to identify various genres to be read while allowing student choice. (The log and checklist can be edited.) Use what works for your activity.
Standards are included for Common Core (CCSS), Georgia Standards of Excellence (GSE), School Librarian Effectiveness Instrument, Georgia (SLEI) and the American Association of School Librarians (AASL).
A few suggestions for readers who complete the challenge are given for various resource/budget levels.
