The Enlightenment, much like the Renaissance and Scientific Revolution before it, marked a fundamental change in humanity's relationship with the world. However, unlike those previous movements, which focused on the arts and sciences, the Enlightenment was driven by the belief that human reason could solve the world's great social and political problems.
Featuring such intellectual bigwigs as Adam Smith, Karl Marx, John Locke and Voltaire, this eleven-question Fill-in-the-Blanks worksheet catalogs the philosophers (and 'Philosophes') who were responsible for some of history's most revolutionary ideas - Communism, Economics, Utilitarianism & Political Science, just to name a few.
Using their textbook and/or the Internet, students will follow the clues provided to identify which 17th & 18th Century thinkers were responsible for which ideas, and how those ideas would in turn fundamentally challenge Europe's established order.
Perfect as an in-class activity, take-home assignment or review sheet!
