When my fifth graders have unpacked and begun eating their breakfast in the morning, I typically play a CNN News video for them to watch while they eat. I leave a "5 W's" graphic organizer on the front table for them to pick up as well. The students fill this sheet out as they watch and eat. They can make notes, jot down important words or phrases, write direct quotes, or write complete descriptive sentences (however you prefer). I have found that these prompts help the students completely submerge themselves in the video. MOST days, they sit, eat, and work quietly. This sheet is in direct correlation with Common Core Standard CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.5.2. In order to get "more bang for your buck" with this worksheet, I also like to use it as a graphic organizer for a more extensive informative writing piece. Feel free to use the document and edit it to your needs! Please leave comments to let me know any bright ideas this may have helped to dig up!
