I like to have a variety of independent center activities
my students can transition to, so I designed this quick, easy, and fun little puzzle center to go along with Jerry Pallotta’s story, “Who Will See Their Shadow This Year?”
It’s the perfect story to design a 3-piece puzzle
activity for, as a variety of animals see their shadows
and cause all kinds of crazy weather
Students find the center animal piece, then look for the matching shadow puzzle piece, as well as the bottom part of the puzzle which is the weather
To make this center self correcting
number the back of the pieces.
1a, 1b, 1c; - 2a, 2b, 2c etc.
Make sure that you number the puzzles in the order that the animals appear in the story; (chicken first, polar bear second etc.) so that students can also use the animal picture pieces and sequence
them in the chronological
order that they appear in the story.
This will help practice the “retell” and “sequence” a story standards.
I’ve included an ordinal answer key, so you don’t have to go back through and check the story for when the animal appeared or what weather their shadow caused.
I’m Diane from Teach With Me, hoping your kiddos enjoy this center, which is also great for “early finishers” too.
