Where does blame reside for tragedy that befalls the characters in a story? Who is responsible? This over-arching question forms the foundation for a great end of book discussion. This cumulative pie chart activity takes some popular 8th to 12th grade literary works and gives students a chance to make a case for percentage of responsibility. It even brings a bit of math into the mix!
The directions are universal for the selected works. Included on each sheet are the identified people/groups, directions for individual and group project completion, and a grading rubric for both portions. I also like to have my students complete a secondary round where they work in groups to create one large chart to present to the class.
The works include: Romeo and Juliet, To Kill a Mockingbird, Macbeth, Lord of the Flies, Boy in the Striped Pajamas, A Separate Peace, The Outsiders, The Pearl, and The Great Gatsby.
