Product Description
While it may seem straight forward, identifying who is telling the story (point of view) can be a very difficult concept for students- especially when asked to explain how they know. This packet was created to help students retell stories to identify who is telling the story with these 6 leveled texts that your studentst will find interesting and engaging!

This no prep ELA Print and Go Packet that provides opportunities for your students to determine who is talking and or telling a story. There are 6 leveled texts in all. All 6 texts have been leveled using Lexile and fall between 100 - 350L to ensure they are readable for your students. There are 3 passages told by the character and 3 told by the narrator. These are great for whole class practice, independent practice, morning work, homework, small group instruction and more! This was written for 1st grade, but it is useful for 2nd graders who need additional fluency and comprehension practice or for advanced Kindergartners.

There are 2 different layouts for each passage. Please note that the passages are the same only the layout of the organizer changes.

Layout 1 has lines for students to write their responses. The question is the same on every page. "Who is telling the story?" and "How do you know?" This second question will ensure that your students aren't simply guessing- they will need to go back and find the evidence to support their answers. This is perfect for increasing the rigor and challenging students. **Side Note: not every student is the same. I have students who are English Language Learners and oftentimes it is challenging for them to even read the passage so I will differentiate for them by cutting the second question off and they will verbally explain how they know. Differentiation is as easy as that! Layout 1 is offered in both color and in black & white.
Layout 2 has the same two questions, but the "Who is telling the story?" is asked in a multiple choice format - perfect for familiarizing students with the question format they will see on future district and state assessments. Students are still asked to explain their thinking in their own words for the second question. Layout 2 is only offered in black & white.
