It is the late 1800s, and a court hearing will take place to determine who western lands should belong to – Americans or Native Americans. In this activity students will individually prepare a persuasive argument that argues for each student’s respective position based on evidence collected. Students will research government acts and treaties, like the Homestead Act, the Dawes Act, and the second Fort Laramie Treaty as well as analyze primary source perspectives from Native Americans and U.S. generals alike. Students will present their evidence in a court hearing that will determine the fate of western lands in the United States.
