One of my biggest challenges as an educator was the "little" behavior problems that would occur throughout the classroom that would hinder me from starting or continuing a lesson. Talking to a neighbor, playing with supplies, tapping on desks, etc would all prevent me from addressing the class in a timely manner. I wanted to come up with a way to get the kids attention fast, get them to police each other and give them something to look forward to.
This class reward system is effective because its not an "all or nothing" behavior plan. As soon as kids know that they have lost the hope of getting a reward, we as the teacher lose a lot of leverage. This plan has three levels of reward which leads to a continued sense of working towards something fun.
In addition, as soon as they would see me even walking toward the numbers as I was about to remove a point they would immediately quiet each other down "She's about to take a number!"
This handout describes the reward system.
