This Math packet includes vocabulary, examples and practice problems, websites explaining how to work the problems, a foldable, and other activities to teach place value, multiplication, and division of whole numbers. It was designed as a 5th grade unit, but can be used to extend learning for advanced 4th graders and remediation for 6th graders.
After several years of picking up “lost” handouts from my students, hearing concern from parents about not understanding the “new math”, and the removal of math books from our classrooms, I decided to organize my math assignments differently.
My students use 3 prong folders with pockets for each math unit. I copy my pages using the packet setting on our school copier and have the students place the packet in the prongs. The packet makes up the basic assignments that I will cover including websites and examples of how to solve different types of problems. The packet has also been helpful for saving time in handing out assignments or waiting for students to copy problems as well as moving more quickly over concepts that students are already proficient in. I also copy assignments as need be for students that need additional practice and these assignments are placed in the prongs after the student packet. Some of the extras, such as foldables, used in my class go into the pockets. It has been a beneficial change in my classroom organization. I hope you will enjoy using these ideas and inserting additional assignments that you like to use in the packet.
