Mardi Gras is right around the corner. Have some fun while teaching about this unique holiday!
This game for 2 or more players is played like old maid. The object
of the game is to gather pairs without getting stuck with the king cake
baby! During the Mardi Gras season, thousands of delicious, colorful king cakes are eaten, but whoever find the small, plastic baby hidden inside must buy the next king cake. No one wants to get stuck with the baby!!
Use cards on page 2 to teach Mardi Gras vocabulary then play! Once they are all dealt, players should look through their cards and discard the pairs. I require my students to make sentences with their pairs or describe them. I use this to address language or to hear how my articulation and fluency students are carrying over their skills into connected speech. Players take turns picking a card from another player’s deck without seeing it and adding to their hand. If it makes a pair, they discard it (and describe it or make 1 or more sentences about it). Then the next player picks a card from another player and so on. Once a player pairs up and discards all of his/her cards, they are safe and out of the game. Eventually all cards will be discarded except THE BABY. The person left holding the baby loses the game!
Just print, cut & play! Laminate for durability. Happy Mardi Gras!
