The objective of the game is to help students recognize that direct and indirect characterization give the reader insights into the story’s characters and reviewing the plots of the stories. Teachers may choose to focus on one story or review several stories at once. Allowing students to assist each other choose quotes when needed through discussion and collaboration among students in each group will also help each group member better understand the plot of the story/stories as well as remember and describe the key characters of the story/stories. For this reason, teachers may create groups so that the more advanced readers can assist those who struggle. Teachers may differentiate by assigning groups particular stories and by determining the number of stories used in the game. The quote card and character card templates allow teachers to add short stories, novels and even plays to the game making this game useful for any classroom. Also, teachers may choose to have students use the quotes they choose for their characters as support for a characterization essay or written informal reflection about their characters.
