This PowerPoint presentation attempts to explain why the United States was attacked on September 11, 2001. It begins by briefly examining the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan in 1979. In doing so it looks at U.S. attempts to work with and equip the Mujahedeen as they resisted Soviet occupation. The idea that both the sovereignty of Afghanistan, and the security of Islam, needed to be protected is covered, bringing Osama bin Laden into the story. The presentation then shifts to cover growing tension between Iran and Iraq following the rise of the Ayatollah Khomeini to power. The Sunni / Shiite split is used to explain the origins of the Iran Iraq war. This in turn helps explain why Saddam Hussein ordered the invasion of Kuwait. America's involvement in Operation Desert Shield then becomes the crux of the presentation. America's presence is Saudi Arabia, and Osama bin Laden's reaction set the tone for increased Al Qaeda attacks on the U.S. and Americans. It concludes with a brief account of the 1993 World Trade Center attack, the 1998 bombings in Kenya and Tanzania, and the attack on the USS Cole in 2000. It ends by setting the stage for the attack on September 11.
