This nonfiction reading is designed to help students acquire reading and writing skills with a reading based on an engaging question. The reading covers the work of scientists who have studied the purring of cats in a number of cat species. Several hypotheses as to the adaptive advantages of purring are presented. Students are asked to show their understanding of the reading by listing the hypotheses, by evaluating the effectiveness of an example used in the reading, and then come up with their own experiment to test a hypothesis. Reading is at a grade-8 level.
