Using regular cola cans, and diet cola cans, teachers review physical properties, and have students identify why some float and others sink.

I wrapped the regular cola cans in black duct tape, and the diet cola cans in white duct tape, and did not reveal the types of cola until the end of the lesson (this adds to the disequilibrium in student thinking, and engages further thinking).

Students record all physical properties of the cans (including height, circumference, mass, and volume) and use this data to determine why some cans sink and why others float.
